Women in Sport
Places for Women in Sport are available now.
Training commences on Monday, the 12 March 2012
Women in Sport is an initiative of the Irish Sports Council which aims to increase the participation of women in Ireland in sport. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 Trilogy Triathlon partnered with Laois Sports Partnership to support 30 new-to-tri ladies in their quest to complete their first triathlon. A triathlon is an endurance event and a huge personal achievement to complete.
In previous years, to support this, the race put on 3 FREE coached training sessions per week during February and March. Trilogy Triathlon Club are again joining with Laois Sports Partnership.
If you are a lady returning to sport after a long and absent spell or a lady who is dipping their toes into sport for the first time, and live in County Laois, you then qualify for a place on this excellent initiative. If you are reading this and nodding your head in agreement, then please do not hesistate in contacting me through sinead@trilogy.ie . I will then be able to place you on the list.
| Session | Day | Time | Where to Meet | Coach | Notes |
| Running | Monday | 19:00hrs - 20:00hrs | PortLaoise College running track | Denise Murphy | Denise is a qualified and highly skilled Level 2 Triathlon Coach and personal trainer. Currently, she is a staff member of the successfully launched 'National Junior Academy'. Denise is increasing her skill set by commencing a Pilates Instructor course, Not content with that, she can often be found putting the Trilogy members through their paces - and even ones they did not realise they had until Denise found them! |
| Swimming | Friday | 18:00hrs - 19:00hrs | Portarlington Leisure Centre | Eimear Mathews | A fully qualified swim teacher and leader of Pirhana Swim Club in Portarlington, Eimear has a long successful history of taking land lovers and turning them into water babies. Eimear has been involved from the start with the Women in Sport initiative and so far, everyone has got out of the pool alive! |
| Cycling | Saturday | 11:00 | Portarlington Leisure Centre | Sinead Wearen | Sinead is a qualified Physical Training Instructor in the Irish Defence Forces and also a Level 1 Triathlon Coach. Sinead will always tell you that the bike, while the longest part of triathlon, it is the easiest part. After all, you get to sit down! Don't show up at the training session without a helmet. No helmet = no cycle. (She is extremely strick on this point). Also, to get into her good books, make sure bikes are road worthy: tyres pumped, chains oiled etc |
Many new members ask if they need to attend every one of these sessions - and while we encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible, you are absolutely welcome to attend as your availability dictates. New lady members may also want to join Trilogy Triathlon club's training sessions, and benefit from advice and support over the weeks leading up to the 2012 race.
The Women in Sport programme and its continuing association with the event is a fantastic success for all involved, and it was many the tear of joy and relief that was shed as our participants in 2009, 2010 and 2011 realised their goal one by one.
So if you are a woman based in Laois and hoping to complete Portlaoise Try-athlon in 2012 please contact the club via the Trilogy Trathlon website or email me directly through sinead@trilogy.ie. You can read more about Women in Sport at www.womeninsport.ie and www.laoissports.ie
